Punk Rock Barbie Causes Outrage
Believe it or not, but the iconic Barbie doll has sported ink before. Her first foray into tattoos was in 1999 and again in 2009. But the latest version, a limited edition doll designed by Japanese design house Tokidoki, has really upset parents who are outraged at the doll's edgy look. The famous doll looks almost like a new person, sporting punk-rock threads, shocking-pink hair and a nice selection of tattoos. Comments to sites offering the doll show that many people are clearly not happy, saying this will corrupt children into getting tattoos. But, as the Time article points out, few seem concerned that the doll's notoriously unrealistic figure is an issue. The fact that it is a limited collector's item (priced at R400) also doesn't seem to sink in.
