South African maize and wheat prices closes a bit lower on Friday due to a lack of local commercial buying and a bit of a stronger rand.

“The market as a whole has been weak this whole week compared to US prices due to a lack of local commercial buying. There is an inherent weakness due to a lack of interest in our market‚” a local trader said.

At 12.09pm the rand was trading at R9.0019 to the dollar from its previous close of R9.0686.

The white maize contract for March 2013 delivery lost R11 to R2‚167 per ton‚ the white maize contract for July 2013 dipped R1 to R2‚052 per ton and the white maize contract for September 2013 gave back R7 to R2‚077.

The yellow maize contract for March 2013 delivery lost R5 to R2‚303 per ton and the July 2013 yellow maize contract was off R15 to R2‚080 per ton.

The wheat contract for March 2013 dropped by R38 to close at R3‚640 per ton and the wheat July 2013 contract also lost R38 to close at R3‚730.
